Springfield is a town of about 9,000 located in central Vermont just west of the Connecticut River (which forms the boundary with New Hampshire.) The town is an old mill town, and has both operating and vacant factories. As of 2007, the largest mill in town, a sprawling factory on the banks of the Black River, was vacant. Springfield is at the heart of the area known as "Precision Valley" because of its historic proliferation of precision machining shops. The town also achieved fame in 2007 when it beat 13 other Springfields in the United States and won the right to host the premiere of "The Simpsons Movie."
